About

10 miles west of Llanelli, Kidwelly lies on the River Gwendraeth above Carmarthen Bay and has a population of some 3,000. There are impressive remains of a Norman castle overlooking the river and the town which includes work from about 1200 to about 1476.

Kidwelly grew significantly during the industrial revolution and was home to a large brickworks and tinworks. The history of the latter is recorded in the Kidwelly Industrial Museum which is situated just a mile north of the town on the site of the second oldest recorded tinplate works in the UK.

Ffos Las Racecourse is to the east of Kidwelly between the villages of Trimsaran and Carway and opened in June 2009. It was the first new National Hunt racecourse to be built in the UK for 80 years and Wales's third racecourse; the course features National Hunt and flat racing.
