New Tredegar (Tredegar Newydd) is a former mining community in the Rhymney Valley to the north of Caerphilly and the area is rich in the mining heritage of South Wales. New Tredegar is home to 'The Winding House', the museum for Caerphilly County Borough which opened in 2008. A bold, glass-fronted structure that has been constructed around the former Elliot Colliery winding house and the museum houses a range of attractions and exhibitions, with the centrepiece being a magnificent grade 2* listed winding engine that was used to transport the miners up and down the lift shafts.
The nearest railway station to New Tredegar is Tir-Phil on the Rhymney line from Cardiff Central.
