About
Situated in the Rhondda Fawr Valley, Tonypandy is a town with a population of 3,500 in the county borough of Rhondda Cynon Taf. In the mid-19th century, the Rhondda began its industrial transformation after the successful excavation of coal. With the extension of the Taff Vale Railway in 1856, the Rhondda grew but unlike the surrounding villages, Tonypandy also grew as a financial and social hub, providing services and amenities for the neighbouring communities. Today the town is still one of the principal shopping areas in the Rhondda.
Tonypandy has a railway station on the Rhondda line from Cardiff Central.
