About
Sustrans route 81 or "Lon Cambria" is an East-West cycle route which crosses the Cambrian Mountains and heads towards Shrewsbury and beyond.
From Aberystwyth the route runs along the old railway line and is completely traffic free for a large distance along the River Ystwyth towards the Cambrian Mountains.
Crossing the Cambrian Mountains is via a country lane and the route heads South towards Elan Valley which is predominantly traffic free. However if you wish to avoid this diversion then you can take route 818 which heads directly towards Llanidloes.
Observation by cyclists:
Ystwyth Trail sustrans 81 Traffic-Free section, south of Llanafan
"This section is steep (very steep in one short section) & has deep ruts, making difficult for a disabled-trike & hybrid bikes. It is annotated on the sustrans map as rough surface but its not clear how bad this section is, I suspect the ruts were caused by recent heavy rain. With “Hind-sight” we should have used the road but always prefer “traffic-free” routes"
