About
This route takes the rolling roads through the valleys of the River Irfon, River Cammarch and River Cnyffiad. Quite challenging to the novice cyclist but should still be completed within four hours.
1. (00km) Start at the square in Llanwrtyd Wells with your back to the
Neuadd Arms Hotel and follow the A483(T) south towards Llandovery. After about 500m (550yds), TURN L towards Cefn Gorwydd passing the playing fields on your left. Follow this undulating road to Cefn Gorwydd x-roads 3.5km (2m) and TURN L. Follow this long straight road to the centre of Llangammarch Wells.
2. (7.8km/4.9m) TURN L. Cross the River Irfon, pass the Church of St Cadmarch, cross the River Cadmarch and follow the road up past the caravan site to the next junction 9km (5.6m). KEEP R and follow the road down towards the river and the next junction 10km (6.2m). KEEP R along the old Roman Road towards Beulah (approximately 500m before the junction with the A483 is the site of an ancient Roman fort) to the A483.
3. (12km/7.5m) TURN L and follow the road into Beulah. At the junction signposted ABERGWESYN, 13km (8m) TURN R (soon you pass the pretty Victorian church) and follow the road to the L into the beautiful wooded valley of the River Cnyffiad (there are good views to the left where you often see Red Kites) to Abergwesyn.
4. (22km/i 3.7m) KEEP L in Abergwesyn, passing the remains of St. David's Church as you enter the Irfon Valley. You now follow this road all the way back to Llanwrtyd Wells.
At Pwll Bo there is a Forestry Commission picnic site 24.5km (15.2m) and you can enjoy a swim in the wash-pool 25.5km (16m). At 28.5km (17.7m) you pass the ancient parish church of St. David's around which the original village of Pontrhydyfere (Old Llanwrtyd) once clustered. Soon you pass the Dol-y-Coed Park on your right where you can see the remains of the old spa. This is the last bank to climb before you freewheel, nearly, back into Llanwrtyd Wells.
