Lampeter is an old market town that is now famous for housing one of the oldest universities in Britain. The town has remained largely unspoilt since its days as an agricultural centre and retains homespun charm that is proud of its heritage, a legacy attested to by the regular cattle markets, horse fairs and antique auctions.

The University of Wales, Trinity St David was founded in 1822 under the auspices of the Anglican clergy. It was designed by Charles Cockerell and its rugby team is the oldest in Wales.

The university provides the town with a dynamic, diverse and vibrant population catered for by a wide and rich selection of bars and Cafes. The annual Lampeter Food Festival is held on the University Campus and was relocated there in 1999 when HRH The Prince of Wales opened the event. Another popular attraction is the Welsh Quilt Centre that houses an incredible permanent collection of traditional Welsh Quilts, and hosts an exciting schedule of exhibitions.

The famous Welsh poet Dylan Thomas lived at Plas Gelli in nearby Talsam during World War II, and the Dylan Thomas trail leads its followers from Lampeter to other beauty spots on the West Coast like New Quay and Aberaeron.

Lampeter's commitment to culture is emphasised by the annual Eisteddfod Pantyfedwen, a celebration of Welsh arts and culture. More recently the Round Table have established a very popular Beer Festival which is held in the Arts Hall on the University Campus annually.

WALKERS ARE WELCOME
Lampeter is ideally located as a base for walkers. Nestling in the beautiful valley of the River Teifi, with the Carmarthenshire Vans to the south, and the land gradually rising to the foothills of the Cambrian Mountains to the north and east, there is a choice of riverside walks in the Teifi and Aeron valleys, or woodland and upland walks, such as on the ridge along the Dulais Valley which takes in three Celtic Hillforts. Even the beautiful Cardigan Bay is not far away.
