Mid Wales is closer than you might think. We’re just a few hours by road and rail from most of the UK’s main cities.
From London, for example, the drive time to Mid Wales in under 4 hours and around 2 - 3 hours from Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool or Bristol. To travel across Mid Wales and on to the coast add a further 45 mins – 1 hour to your journey time. Your journey time will vary depending on which part of the region you plan to visit.
Why not join the increasing numbers of independent travellers who are using trains and buses to discover Mid Wales - you'll be surprised by how much of Mid Wales is accessible by regional rail services. Where the trains don't reach, the buses usually do.
From the rest of the UK and beyond, there’s an excellent choice of roads, flights and ferries.
The nearest Motorway access to the region is via the M56 at Chester, The M54 at Telford, the M5 at Worcester and the M50. From South Wales M4 it’s just 40 minutes drive to the southern edge of Mid Wales and the Brecon Beacons.
There are rail services from London Euston to Shrewsbury and Mid Wales (via Birmingham) and you can be in Mid Wales - North Powis in just over 3 hours. From Shrewsbury you can pick up the Heart of Wales Line services through Mid Wales travelling south.
The Cambrian Line services cross Mid Wales – east to west - to arrive at Aberystwyth, Machynlleth and southern Snowdonia.

There are rail services departing from London and arriving at Cardiff Central via London Paddington. From Cardiff, head north on the A470 or west to Mid Wales coast.
Cardiff, Liverpool, Manchester, Bristol or Birmingham International airports are all within 2 - 3 hours drive to most parts of Mid Wales.
Journey time from London by train is just over 3 hours to Mid Wales with a change at Birmingham or Shrewsbury.
There are direct rail links from Birmingham Airport to Aberystwyth and Mid Wales Coast and change at Shrewsbury from Liverpool, Manchester, Bristol and Cardiff
Ferry ports in Wales are located at Fishguard & Pembroke Dock in Pembrokeshire and Holyhead in Anglesey, North Wales.
