Tregaron is a Mid Wales market town that is steeped in history and the Tregaron Heritage Centre is a good place to start your visit. In the 19th century, it was a vital stop for drovers herding cattle, horses, pigs, geese, and sheep across Wales to English markets. Its traditional market, "Ffair Garon," has been a staple of the town since being granted its Royal Charter in 1292—and continues to this day.
Cors Caron National Nature Reserve
Just two miles north of Tregaron lies the Cors Caron National Nature Reserve, home to over 170 species of birds. Some are native, while others migrate from distant parts of the world. A haven for birdwatchers and nature lovers, this vast wetland offers stunning views and diverse wildlife.
One of the region's most iconic sights is the majestic red kite soaring through the skies. Once on the brink of extinction in the UK, this spectacular bird of prey found refuge in Tregaron, one of the first areas to reintroduce and successfully revive the species.
Abergwesyn Pass: A Scenic Mountain Route
The Tregaron–Llanwrtyd Wells mountain road follows the historic drovers' path, offering a stunning drive or cycling route across the Cambrian Mountains. With sweeping views of Abergwesyn Common, rugged landscapes, and remote wilderness, it’s a must-visit for adventure seekers.
Local Legends: The Story of Twm Sion Cati
Tregaron is also rich in folklore, most notably as the playground of Twm Sion Cati, often called the "Welsh Robin Hood." A master of disguise, trickery, and adventure, Twm’s escapades have become legendary throughout Wales. Today, visitors can follow the Twm Sion Cati Town Trail, which leads to locations linked to his mischievous deeds, including a statue in the main square and his will displayed in the local museum.
A Town Shaped by History
Tregaron’s history is deeply connected to its wool industry. Wool from the area was highly valued and even used as a foundation for the railway line that once crossed the Cors Caron bog.
Meanwhile, drovers preparing for their long journeys followed fascinating customs—black cattle were shod with iron plates, pigs wore woollen "socks" with leather soles, and geese had their feet coated in tar and sand to protect them on the journey.
