About

Cared for by the National Trust since 1952, Powis Castle & Gardens near Welshpool include world-famous gardens, 13th century castle, Clive Museum and historic collection.

Powis Castle, built around 1200 as a medieval fortress, sits high on a rock above its world-famous garden. Powis Castle reflects the changing ambitions of the Herbert family, who occupied the Castle from the 1570s. Each generation enlisted artists to grow the family’s collection of paintings, sculpture, furniture and tapestries on view throughout the house. It has been remodelled and embellished over more than 400 years,

Clive Museum
One of the UK’s most significant collections of Indian objects is displayed in the Clive Museum at Powis Castle. As major figures in Britain’s colonial East India Company, Robert Clive and his son Edward (later 1st Earl of Powis) looted many of these objects during their seizure of power in India and Myanmar and violent subsequent rule in the 18th century. Clive wealth amassed through the East India Company remained at Powis, contributing to later modernisation of the Castle and Gardens that transformed Powis to how it exists today.

Powis Castle Gardens
Powis is one of the few Baroque gardens to survive almost intact since the 1680s and is a delight for enthusiasts as well as lovers of beauty and tranquility.Laid out under the influence of Italian and French styles, the garden is overhung with clipped yews and shelters rare and tender plants. It retains original lead statues and features an orangery on the terraces.

Please be aware there are unfenced terraces in the garden.

The Courtyard Restaurant & Shop
The Courtyard  Shop at Powis Castle  has a beautiful selection of homeware, gifts, souvenirs and delicious treats to choose from. The Courtyard Restaurant is open daily serving hot lunches, sandwiches, savoury snacks, cakes and hot and cold drinks. If the weather is good, dine al fresco and enjoy a beautiful view of the castle from our courtyard tables. Why not take a hot drink or sandwich into the garden and find the perfect spot to picnic?
