About

THE RODD
For 2023 we have an exciting programme, including a number of exhibitions, trails and workshops with full details on our website. Visitors are welcome to explore our gardens and grounds, which include riverside walks. The estate sits in the beautiful Hindwell Valley on the English Welsh border close to the picturesque Welsh market town of Presteigne and the internationally renowned town of books, Hay on Wye.

The Trust is a registered charity and cares for the former home, artist's studio and 250 acre estate of the late Sir Sidney Nolan, who was a leading artist of the 20th century. The Trust also owns a large collection of Nolan’s works, his library and personal archive. Most famous for his Ned Kelly series of paintings, today we celebrate his life-long experimentation and passion for creativity as well as his love for the environment.

Our exhibitions and events present artwork from our own collection as well as exhibitions by leading and emerging contemporary artists, displayed in our 17th century tithe barn and Rodd Court, a Jacobean manor house, which was the last home of Sir Sidney. It is a remarkable, relatively untouched example of 17th-century architecture. The Trust also runs education and residency programmes, which support children, young people, adults and artists to learn, exchange ideas and create.

The Rodd is also home to Nolan’s last studio, the only one  to survive, and remains largely untouched. The studio provides visitors with a rare insight into Nolan’s materials and processes and is an important resource for continued research.

Tea, coffee and cake is available. Well behaved dogs on a lead are welcome in all our spaces.

TOURS

Tours explore the history of 17th century Rodd Court, showcasing its unique elements and unusual talking points. Tours are available for a minimum of 10 participants, and we charge £12.50 per person, which includes hot drinks, cakes, and access to our gallery, gardens, and woodland. A tour lasts roughly 2 hours.

We can customise tours to suit your group, for example, if you’re interested in gardens our gardener can take you on a tour of our ancient apple orchards. Alternatively, our curator is happy to lead a tour of our exhibitions. Timings and dates are flexible.
