The Best Places to View Dark Skies in the Cambrian Mountains
1) Elan Valley: In the heart of the Cambrian Mountains near Rhayader, this area has been designated as an International Dark Sky Park, and it is home to some of the darkest skies in the UK.
2) Llyn Clywedog: This reservoir near Llanidloes in the north east of the Cambrian Mountains is a popular location for stargazing and offers a fantastic view of the Milky Way.
3) Abergwesyn Pass: The Abergwesyn Pass from Llanwrtyd Wells to Tregaron is a single track route that runs through an almost brutally wild landscape of Abergwesyn Common moors. Panoramic views of the night sky, making it an ideal route for stargazing.
4) Teifi Pools: Teifi Pools are recognised as a Dark Sky Discovery Site. At around 1400 feet above sea level on the western edge of the Cambrian Mountains, the Teifi Pools are accessible via a narrow single track road near Pontrhydfendigaid which leads to the Teifi Pools.
5) The Arch: This location near Aberystwyth is a Dark Sky Discovery Site. On the B4574 mountain road to Rhayader surrounded by the Cambrian Mountains and offers a stunning view of the night sky.
6) Bwlch Nant yr Arian: This site is home to a red kite feeding station, but it's also a great location for stargazing due to its low levels of light pollution.
7) Staylittle and Dylife: These two villages located in the heart of the Cambrian Mountains are both great locations for stargazing, with minimal light pollution and unobstructed views of the night sky.
8) Llyn Brianne: Llyn Brianne is a stunning location for stargazing and was officially awarded Dark Sky Discovery Site status in October 2019, the first site to receive such an award in the Cambrian Mountains.There are two car parks at southern corner of reservoir.
