According to local legend, these forests are part of the lost land of Cantre’r Gwaelod, a mythical kingdom that was swallowed by the sea. The legend tells of how the guardian of the sea defences, Seithenyn, failed to close the gates, leading to the kingdom's downfall. In some versions of the myth, the forest stretched for over 20 miles to the west of Cardigan Bay.
