About

Pembroke Dock (population 8,700) or The Port of Pembroke is a town with a short but illustrious past; at the end of the 18th century the area was just farmland but from1814 it grew up around the Royal Naval Dockyard. By the time it closed in 1926 it had launched over 260 Royal Naval ships, submarines and royal yachts. The Gun Tower was built in 1851 to protect the Dockyard and it is now a museum illustrating the story of the town. It has recently been renovated and refitted as it would have looked in Victorian times, complete with a roof top cannon and realistic models of defending soldiers.

The Flying Boat Centre based in the Royal Dockyard recounts the town’s 30 year link with the RAF and flying boats which started in 1931. During 1943, when home to the Sunderland flying boats, it was the largest operational base for flying boats in the world.

Pembroke Dock is the terminus of the railway line from Carmarthen/Whitland and Tenby.
