About
A small town in Carmarthenshire, Whitland takes its name from its medieval Cistercian Abbey; the monastery pre-dates Tintern and the magnificent setting of the ruin and the Abbey's layout can still be viewed.
Located in the centre of town, the Hywel Dda Gardens & Interpretive Centre is a culture centre which commemorates the site of an assembly of lawyers and churchmen, sometimes described as the first Welsh parliament, called in 930 by King Hywel Dda to codify Welsh laws. The gardens are planted with specimens symbolic of medieval Wales and the designs include artwork which re-emphasises the Celtic tree symbolism of the gardens
Whitland has a railway station on the West Wales line between Carmarthen and Fishguard and is the junction for the line to Tenby and Pembroke Dock.
