Dyfnant and Vyrnwy Forests are located in north Powys, a part of Mid Wales renowned for its rolling hills, green valleys and picturesque farmsteads and villages. Owain Glyndwr, the Welsh Prince who fought for Welsh independence and united Wales, once rode these hills. Dyfnant Forest itself is an upland coniferous (trees with cones) forest with open areas and streams for you to enjoy.
Dyfnant Forest is an upland forest on the edge of the Cambrian mountains just south of Lake Vyrnwy. It forms part of the National Forest for Wales which will form a connected ecological network running throughout Wales, bringing social, economic and environmental benefits. Parts of the network will eventually form a trail running the length and breadth of Wales, so anyone can access it wherever they live.
DYFNANT FOREST | Walking, Horseriding & Carraige Driving
Glyndwr's Way National Trail | Llanbrynmair to Llanwddyn. 18 miles/ 29km.
A day of walking in the pine woods as the Trail passes through a high forestry block, over wild Pencoed, home to untamed ponies and then into the great Dyfnant forest. Finally, into Llanwddyn and spectacular views of Lake Vyrnwy and the massive dam.
Leaving Llanbrynmair the route takes you northwards on a new section of the Trail under the railway line. It soon takes you up a steep hill, but the climb is worth it, for the views of the valley below. The route continues along a forest trail before rejoining the old Glyndwr’s Way. You soon climb to the edge of Pen Coed and across a particularly lonely stretch of bracken covered moor.
From Llangadfan, the route now takes you through the huge plantation of Dyfnant forest. Llanwyddyn caters to a steady stream of visitors to Lake Vyrnwy and its impressive 33 arched dam.
Pont Llogel Wood (OS grid Ref: SJ 033154)
Pont Llogel a small woodland next to the Afon Efyrnwy.This tranquil area has been designated a SSSI Choice of 3 walks available from Pont Llogel Car Park & Picnic site - a waymarked short walk along the River Vyrnwy and access to two longer walks.
Pen y ffordd | Dyfnant Rainbow Trails
Pen y Fford is the hub for the Dyfnant Rainbow Trails and designed with horses in mind but also welcoming walkers. There are 5 waymarked trails starting from the Penyffordd Car Park. The trails through rolling hills and lush green valleys range from the easiest which is the 5 mile Banwy Trot or, for the more experienced, two 16 milers for a full day's ride.for horse riders. The facilities include a purpose built car park with a one way system to allow drivers of horse boxes to roll in and roll out., ample parking for horse trailers and cars and a corral for horses.
Hendre Car Park & Picnic Area | Carraige Driving
Hendre is the starting point for the carriage driving routes. The facilities include a car park with hitching rails, quiet area to harness up and put to and ample space for horse boxe

Sometimes NRW need to close or divert trails for your safety whilst they undertake maintenance work or forest operations.
Occasionally it is neccessary to close a site in extreme weather, such as high winds or snow and ice due to the risk of injury to visitors or staff.
Please always follow any instructions onsite and make sure you follow any temporary diversion signs in place.

Road Directions
There are three car parks managed by Natural Resources Wales in Dyfnant Forest from which to start your visit. All three have free parking:
Directions to Pont Llogel Car Park: Take the A458 from Welshpool to Dolgellau road and turn on to the B4395 at Llangadfan to Lake Vyrnwy. After about three miles you reach the hamlet of Pont Llogel. Just over the bridge on the right hand side you will find the Pont Llogel car park.

Directions to Penyffordd Car Park: Penyffordd car park is located on the B4395 between Llangadfan and Lake Vyrnwy. You can get onto this road off the A458 (Mallwyd to Welshpool) at Llangadfan or off the A490 (Llanfyllin to Welshpool) at Llanfyllin, taking the B4393 and then left onto the B4395 signposted to Llwydiarth and Pont Llogel.

Directions to Hendre Car Park: From the Penyffordd car park: turn left onto the B4395 (from A458 Llangadfan heading to Lake Vyrnwy). Follow this road for one and a half miles before turning left by Hendre cottages on the corner. The Hendre car park is 300 metres up this road on the right hand side.
From Llanfyllin: take the B4393 and then turn left on to the B4395 signposted to Llwydiarth and Pontllogel. Turn right by Hendre cottages. The Hendre car park is 300 metres up this road on the right hand side.
