Llannerch-y-medd was a thriving market town in the C18th and C19th but Llangefni to the south took over this role; the population today is approximately 2,000. Llannerch means "a woodland clearing". The word medd in the name is Welsh for mead, which is made from honey, and the name may be related to the production of honey for mead.

Llyn Alaw reservoir is Anglesey’s largest lake situated to the north-west of Llannerch-y-medd and overlies the former peatland of Cors y Bol. The reservoir has a number of small islands, and there are two bird hides, three picnic sites and a network of paths. There is also a small information centre with details about Llyn Alaw and its wildlife. The lake supports a recreational trout fishery, for which fishing permits are available.
